SILVER PRIZE

Silvia Barutcieff / ROMANIA

The funtion of sunglasses is not only limited to protecting the eyes from the sun light and radiation but also is making a statement about the person wearing them. It is the image that the user whats to be seen and perceived as by the others. In the same time it also hides the real identity of that person by covering their eyes and making them not fully recognizeable by the others.

The selected users are part of a nishe target group, aged between 16-24 years old, who often live in the suburbs of big cities and most of them have a rebelius attitude against traditional culture and the social behaviour. They feel that they can make a change and take role models (often controversial characters) as inspiration for their look and clothig style, only to stand out the relatively conventional and uniform crowd.

The inspiration for the shape of the sunglasses came from the press photos that depict suspects arrested by the authorities and usually show a black rectangle over their eyes to hide their public identity. By translating that visual image to the design of the sunglasses the users wearing them wants to be associated with the rebel against the system and in the same time is trying to hide their real identity from others.

The materials used for the lens is a skretch resistant plastic to which is attached the nose support (by co-molding). Made out of ruberized plastic, the nose support flexes out for better fit and improved engonomy. Metalic arms are also attached to the lens in the back with no visible screw or mount from the front of the sunglasses – to keep the illusion of the black rectangle over the eyes.
